Mobile TV Antenna Chip Co-Developed by Vishay and Siano Wins
Consumer Electronics Association Award
Revolutionary UHF Chip Antenna Recognized for Innovation in the “Enabling Technologies” Award Category
New York, NY - November 28, 2007 - Siano Mobile Silicon, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for Mobil Digital TV (MDTV), announced today that its SMS8021/RFW8021 UHF mobile TV antenna chip has been named an International CES Innovations 2008 Design and Engineering Award honoree in the Enabling Technologies product category. Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the annual Innovations Design and Engineering Awards are judged by a panel of independent industrial designers, engineers, and trade press editors. The award is given to the most innovative CE products for the 2008 annual competition.
The tiny, patented ’8021 mobile TV antenna chip was co-developed with Vishay Intertechnology, one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components. The SMS8021/RFW8021 won the CES award for its revolutionary features, being the smallest UHF antenna in the world, covering the entire UHF band (470 MHz to 870 MHz). The chip, in addition to being only 10 mm by 15 mm in size, is mountable on a printed circuit board (PCB) using common SMT assembly procedures. It uses a proprietary substrate of special ceramic composition. The award-winning SMS8021/RFW8021 will be on display at the 2008 International CES trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, from January 7 to January 10, 2008.
The SMS8021/RFW8021 enables mobile TV device makers to get rid of the long, external, telescopic rod antennas used so far. This allows DVB-H phones to take the same form and shape as the “regular” mobile (cellular) phones to which end users have grown accustomed during the past decade.
Applications for the SMS8021/RFW8021 include mobile phones, portable multimedia players, notebooks and UMPCs, and accessory cards. The omni-directional antenna chip is applicable to all mobile TV technologies that deploy the UHF spectrum band: DVB-T, DVB-H, ISDB-T, MediaFLO, and China’s DMB-.
“Being recognized as award winners by the Consumer Electronics Associations validates Siano’s leadership in innovations, state-of-the-art technology, and high quality,” said Alon Ironi, CEO of Siano. Today, end users do not appreciate handheld devices with extending, fragile, antennas. Hence, by introducing, together with our partners from Vishay, this tiny, high-performance antenna chip, we are enabling and expediting the mobile TV revolution,” added Ironi. “In addition, Siano’s offering for mobile TV, comprising both receivers and antennas, is the most complete in the market.”
The SMS8XXX is a complementary product line to Siano’s mobile TV receiver product line, the SMS1XXX. Siano’s SMS1010 is the industry’s only low-cost, ultra-low-power, quad-band, multi-standard receiver in mass production. It supports DVB-H, DVB-T, DAB, DAB-IP, and T-DMB mobile digital TV standards in various spectrum ranges, from 170 MHz up to 1680 MHz.
