NETANYA, Israel - December 6, 2006: Siano Mobile Silicon, a fabless semiconductor maker of solutions for Mobile Digital TV (MDTV), announced today that Marvell has selected Siano's SMS1000 multi-band, multi-standard receiver for its upcoming PXA3xx Concept Platform, centered on Marvell's PXA300/310 mobile application processors.
Code-named Dracut, the Marvell PXA3xx application processor family is especially designed for advanced handheld devices such as smartphones, PDAs, portable navigation devices, portable media players, etc. It is equipped with dedicated low power hardware engines to support a broad range of multimedia streaming protocols and compression technologies.
The new Marvell PXAxx Concept Platform targets world-wide Original-Design Manufacturers (ODMs), Original-Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), mobile network operators (MNO), MDTV broadcasters and MDTV applications and content providers wishing to bring-to-market compelling MDTV mobile devices or content. The concept platform provides the MNO with a single device to offer seamless switching of content between unicast and multicast over 3G networks and broadcast content over DVB-H/T, T-DMB and DAB.
"As Marvell enters the mobile and handheld device market now, with the acquisition of the cellular and handheld business of Intel, we look for emerging applications upon which Marvell can exhibit its strong advantages," said Gary Forni, Director of Platform Enabling, Cellular and Handheld Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell. "Mobile Digital TV is a primary feature of the PXA3xx Concept Platform, and the combination of Marvell's PXA3xx processors and Siano's SMS1000 receiver provides for an ideal platform for world-wide mobile digital TV coverage and excellent user experiences."
The Siano SMS1000 is the industry's only low-cost, ultra-low-power, quad-band multi-standard receiver. It supports DVB-H, DVB-T, DAB, DAB-IP and T-DMB mobile digital standards, in various spectrum ranges, from 170MHz up to 1680MHz.
"We are inspired by the relentless approach of Marvell towards mobile TV, and we focus on readying the joint concept platform for quick adoption by customers," said Dror Meiri, Director of Business Development, Siano.
